Fortune Magazine in 1939: The emergence of PR

"Ask that public-relations man what to say when a customer asks, 'Hey, Babe, how about Thursday night?' "

One of two PR cartoons found in the March, 1939 issue of Fortune Magazine. The publication ran an extensive round-up of the newly emerging PR field, highlighting the most successful PR people of the era--Ivy Lee (who had died five years prior), Carl Byoir, T. J. Ross, Ed Bernays and Paul Garrett of GM--and the impact it was already having on corporate policy and reputation.
