NASA's Teacher In Space program

On this date in 1986, millions of people around the world, including thousands of children, watched in horror as the Challenger Space Shuttle exploded-- 73 seconds after lift-off. Among the crew members killed was the first-ever school teacher to be sent to outer space. Christa McAuliffe, a 5th grade teacher from N.H., was part of the "Teacher in Space Project," a program NASA designed to renew public interest in the shuttle program. For this trip, NASA had arranged for McAuliffe to deliver a number of live science classes to children back home, an event much publicized in the months before hand. Read an account by NASA's then - public affairs officers, Ed Campion, who had managed the program. http://www.nasa.gov/…/shuttle/main/campion_essay_070808.html
