Selfies Not Invented Yesterday

While we consider it a recent phenomenon, "selfies" were actually a very common technique in the earliest days of photography. The first known selfie was shot by a young amateur photographer named Robert Cornelius in 1839. He called the photograph (upper left) "the first light picture ever taken." In the ensuing 176 years — and until the creation of the "selfie stick" — most self-portraits were taken the old fashioned way: through a mirror.
