Ivy Lee and The NYC Subways

In 1916, New York City’s first subway line, the IRT, hired PR pioneer Ivy Lee to combat competition from the newly launched BMT. He took what was then an innovative approach: to reach out directly to customers, through station posters and passenger newsletters. The Subway Sun and The Elevated Express featured news about subway safety and updates on the IRT line.
