In 1916, New York City’s first subway line, the IRT, hired PR pioneer Ivy Lee to combat competition from the newly launched BMT. He took what was then an innovative approach: to reach out directly to customers, through station posters and passenger newsletters. The Subway Sun and The Elevated Express featured news about subway safety and updates on the IRT line.
